Daisho-in on Miyajima: A place of tranquility far from the hustle and bustle of the city

Daisho-in on Miyajima:
A place of tranquility
far from the hustle and bustle of the city

Located on Miyashima, the Hiroshima Prefecture island known for the World Heritage Itsukushima Shrine, is Daisho-in, the oldest temple on the island. It is said to be one of Japan's three best temples to pray for good luck, family safety, success in exams and warding off evil.

Henjokutsu, which means "cave of light," is a grotto directly below the Daishi Hall. Sand taken from Shikoku’s 88 sacred sites is buried in front of the principle statue. It is said that treading on the sand is equal to visiting each of the sacred sites. The ceiling is covered with hundreds of copper lanterns that create a mystical atmosphere.
